Believe it or not, children have a job to do. It may not fit the perception of what people believe “work” or “a job” to be. But children do have a job. A very important one, in fact.

A child’s “job” is to play and to learn. 

For a child, activities like running, swinging, climbing, buttoning, drawing, and writing are their “occupation.” For some children, this comes naturally. For others, these activities can be challenging.

That’s where we come in. As Pediatric Occupational Therapists, we help children engage, participate, socialize — through playing and learning. 

In the process, they gain confidence and a sense of independence. 

Behavior, appropriate or inappropriate, builds upon the sensory systems. If a child can’t control their body, they will try to control the environment around them — resulting in inappropriate or maladaptive behavior.

Learning and academic performance complete the picture. An easy way to think about it is that sensory integration affects and influences behavior and behavior affects and influences the ability of a child to pay attention and learn.

The Services We Offer

Evaluation

An evaluation is essential for successful treatment. It helps us establish a baseline so we know where and how to start treatment. 

It also helps us identify your child’s strengths as well as areas for attention. From an evaluation, we can tell immediately what you, as a parent, can do at home to support your child’s developmental growth. 

A limited focus evaluation allows us to key in on specific areas — whether that is sensory processing issues, learning difficulties or maladaptive behavior.

Consultation

We offer individual consultations with parents and with a child’s other essential caregivers (for example, a grandparent or nanny). We do not charge for an initial phone consultation with parents. 

Occasionally, within the course of treatment, a parent will also request an additional consultation to address a specific need or concern.

We also offer school districts in-school consultations to evaluate specific children as well as offering consultations as to whether a particular learning environment is “sensory-rich” for a student’s particular situation.

Training

We offer teacher training at public and private schools, daycare centers and other similar learning facilities. Parent training happens within the context of clinic visits or home visits — whichever is more beneficial for a child and families’ particular situation.

Therapy

We offer direct one-on-one therapy with children and their families. We also offer small group sessions as well because we have specific hands-on experience in group dynamics. These sessions will focus on handwriting skills as well as circus-themed group sessions.
